An old saying says that advertising is the heart and soul of commerce. Every version, from the lines yelled at the markets and all the way to posters and video commercials, is strategically orientated so that it catches the attention of the potential buyers and starts that essential conversation leading to the sale itself.

Let’s take a practical example, that most creators to have ever participated to a fair will understand: ensuring a place to a fair and displaying one’s designs does not guarantee actual sales.
Why? Because the majority of people will approach the table only if something draws them there. And even when not searching for something in particular the chances of not seeing further than the general impression are somewhat big.

One of the greatest impressions for me as a child was left by the photographer at the seaside. He would travel up and down the shore with a monkey on his shoulder and would be yelling from the bottom of his lungs „Picture in colours, ready tomorrow!” (there were no smart phones at that time 😉 ). Were you able to miss him? No. Was it clear for everybody what he was selling? Yes. Was he easy to find? Yes.

The strategy was simple: to have everybody on the beach know of his existence and presence. Would he have found himself a fixed location, he would have been visible to a much more limited number of people. Also, think about it, how many people were taking pictures as a souvenir at the last moment simply because the photographer would pass by? Many would have otherwise forgotten or given up due to lack of time. The line chosen to verbally advertise is also highly relevant. Even years later the sentence „Picture in colours, ready tomorrow!” creates the desired effect.

This is a nice story, so now you are going to ask me how can you use this in a handmade fair which is an elegant location with more class without making a spectacle of yourself. Running around the tables yelling „The jewellery, look is ready now!” will definitely make you a memorable presence, however that won’t be in the way you desire.

The essential thing is to understand the strategy and human reactions of such a context:

1. Drawing attention

Be it a window shop or fair display, the most important element is catching the attention of the potential buyers. Displaying the products on a horizontal level is not always the most advantageous because they cannot be properly seen from a distance. People can simply miss a table because they don’t get a glimpse of what is on offering.

The most efficient way to draw the attention is by creating a vertical element, visible from a bigger distance. For example, in the case of jewellery, a mannequin/bust made out of attractive or unconventional materials is useful to display some of the most representative designs. The purpose is only to catch the eye (not to make details visible from a distance) and to attract people closer to one’s table.

2. Wear your creations / use them / offer samples, comfort and relaxation

If you make jewellery, wear it. If you make shoes, bring a chair, a little rug, maybe even a lamp (a plant in a pot, a magazine etc.) and create – in front of or beside the table – a small and cozy place where people can comfortably try on the shoes. Obviously, if there is the option and resources to do so, and if the space allows.
If you make cosmetics, have testers, a mirror and napkins. Personally, I would also bring flowers for a feeling of relaxation. If you sell books you can spread pillows on the floor to allow the customers to browse in a relaxed fashion. Not to mention that having colouring books, paper, and crayons for parents accompanied by children will be highly appreciated. A relaxed parent has time to want and browse, while a stressed parent does not have the necessary patience to relax and is most likely easily irritable. It is also an idea to talk to the rest of the sellers and together suggest the organizers to arrange for such options. It is beneficial both for the sellers and the fair organizers.

3. Start a conversation

So, you have caught the eye of the customer and he is now right where you wanted him to be. What do you do?
Start a conversation. A simple and relaxed conversation. Don’t jump the gun too fast in trying to close the sale. Of course, if you see people eyeing a specific item you can offer details and use that to start the conversation. Otherwise there are plenty of easy day to day topics that can be used.
For example, if a lady carrying flowers stops by, you can say how beautiful the flowers are or how interesting the floral arrangement is (that of course, if it actually is, otherwise you might seriously confuse people). If it’s morning and people pass by carrying coffee, get in the mood: „Mmmm, coffee!”, „Coffee for a good start!”, „Coffee makes the morning better!”. This is guaranteed to have people smiling, and as they will feel more relaxed, the chances of them actually stopping or returning will increase.

4. Close the deal

And you’re almost done. Wrap the products in a nice paper or a present bag. Do not forget to add your business card and to be grateful for the pleasure of being part of somebody’s life.

In conclusion:
– Make your products visible
– Make yourself visible
– Talk to people (relaxed, no pressure)
– Smile and have fun!
