SUIM GLASS (Japan) „I cherish the expression of the glass”

I had an international interview with Kanzaki Misa from SUIM GLASS (Japan). I like their products, I like their style and more important SUIM GLASS received Revista Atelierul’s award at The Transparent Breath” exhibition.

1.When and how did you start your creative business? What was the starting point?

As soon as I graduated from university, I worked at a local glass tourist spot and did personal activities while making the company’s glass products. After working for 7 and a half years, I started my personal activities in 2021 independently in order to deepen my creative activities.

2. What does SUIM stand for?

SUIM is a coined word. SUI was taken from the Japanese kanji „粋”. There are two ways to read „Iki” and „Sui”. Iki is a Japanese aesthetic that developed in the Edo period. The meaning includes the words „things that are not mixed”, „the thing”, „humane” and „severe”, and people who are affectionate, but are refreshing. I have a pleasant impression. I chose it as a brand name because I like the meaning and aesthetics of chic. M was taken from his own name MISA.

3.What is the value of your work? What is your main product? Why did you choose them?

The delicacy of glass, transparency, and soft form. I cherish the expression of the glass that I like. I chose a glass ear cuff because I wanted to make jewelry that can be worn only with glass without metal or metal fittings. The main products are also ear cuffs and rings. There are not many glass jewelry with delicate designs, so please take a good look.

4. I discovered your brand in the exhibition „The Transparent Breath”, how did you find your experience in the exhibition?

It was triggered by a message from the organizer of the exhibition on Instagram DM.

5. How do you see glass art and jewelry in an increasingly digitized society?

The brilliance of glass has a charm that can’t be compared to others. I feel that it is something that calms my mind and life. Because it is a delicate material, we aim to use it carefully and adapt it to our lives.

 6. Which do you like better, online sales or offline sales of your products or brands?

I want you to actually pick it up and see it, so I would like you to see it offline.

 7. Where do you find inspiration? Do you like podcasts, places, and songs?

When I was a child, the scenery of the sea, mountains, night sky, and nature that I touched when I was returning to Amakusa (island) in Kumamoto Prefecture, where my mother’s parents’ house was located remains in my heart. It is well expressed in the works such as the color of the sky, natural light, and the flow of water that can be seen from the four seasons in Japan.

 8. What is the most important lesson you learned in your creative career?

Always thinking about it. If you stop thinking, things that will get better will go that far.

 9. What advice can you give to people who want to start a creative business?

I want you to do what you want to express and what you want to challenge. After that, I think it’s fun, and if I don’t think so, I can’t move my hands.

 10. How do you see the European design expression of glass compared to Japan?

I feel that there is a way to use dynamic shapes and colors. You can also see that kind of strength from the work.
