Gaby Galamaga – artist creator – Kreativ Love

Nicoleta Stoian – artist fimo – Nicomade

Andreea Badragan – artist ceramist – GloryBox

Gaby Galamaga – artist creator – Kreativ Love

Welcome back to part three. This week deal with practicalities. Who, why and how you present yourself are essential elements in creating a brand, however without all the practicalities behind the stage, it just can’t work.

As human beings we actually live through our senses. We become alive at the sound of music, we savor the taste of a glass of wine in the calmness of a fast asleep city, we are instantly energized by the mix of colors on a painting and we get soothed by drawing with our fingers in the fluff of a furniture covered in velvet. More so today, because of the internet, creating, maintaining and advertising a brand are extremely visual and dynamic processes. That is why choosing a style and creating the product photography is essential. Though that sounds complicated and heavy, no one expects all small entrepreneurs to be professional photographers. The technology has given us amazing quality even in the most affordable cameras. Heck, my iPhone does better pictures than my soon to be retired Canon. Anybody can make decent pictures. All you need is a decent decor, a camera/mobile phone, good light and you’re set. Over here we have a simple and easy to follow tutorial to get you started. And as production grows, things evolve and income stabilizes you can take classes and improve your skills. Options range from taking classes in person, online, buying DVD’s or following YouTube tutorials. If things go well you can even hire a professional photographer.

Some time ago I fell in love with a hand watch I found while browsing Etsy.com (an international platform for creators). Delivery was fast and so I soon received a small simple cardboard box. The initial excitement was however replaced by confusion once I opened the package. The watch was in a plastic bag placed on a crumbled piece of newspaper. It was in perfect condition so no complaints there. Now, it is true, there is nothing obliging a producer to wrap its merchandise in a fancy way as long as we buy the product and not the wrapping. And yes, I liked the watch and its quality. I still wear with great pleasure so I will buy again from the respective seller. It would have left a much better impression tough to have found it wrapped even in the most basic colored paper and protected with bubble wrap. Not to mention that it would have been even nicer to find a business card next to it.

It is important not to be overwhelmed by all this. You don’t need a fortune to lay the right foundation. If the budget is tight you could even use a brightly decorated napkin tied with a funky ribbon. You could use little bags made from paper you drew/painted on. You could even make a collage that represents you, scan/photograph it, print and have it as a staple item to add to your brand. Don’t like painting but love sewing? Use felt or other textile and decorate it with a fancy pattern.

OK. Pictures check. Packaging check. What next? How about delivery? It’s time to choose a postal delivery service.
Personally, I choose trust and quality over price. It might seem much when you’re just starting , however earning points on reliability and trust will earn you points on the long run. It will make customers feel safe to trust you with important orders. The risk of an order that does not make it in time for a special event is not worth the cheap appeal of a low price.
When that happened to me I chose to redo the order. It was for a special occasion and I had the available time to do so. That being said, it is not always possible to do so. It also it is not compulsory to do so. And for that it is highly important to lay down a clear set of terms and conditions. Display them both on your personal site as well as on your Facebook page. If you do chose to redo an order outside of the clearly displayed terms and conditions make sure it was entirely your choice and do it with all your heart.

Speaking of terms and conditions, it is important to understand that these refer also to the payment methods. If you sell online you need to know which method of payment you can make available and the required details for the management of each one of them. I personally view the bank transfer as the easiest option. Throughout most of European Union internet banking has been made readily available and easy to use. Transactions fees (also internationally) have been eliminated by most countries. Unfortunately, Romanian banks still has a while to go and things can be a tad difficult. This makes it even more important to do the research and know the available options and their commissions. PayPal is one of the easiest options to use. It does however come with commissions (for the seller) and requires the connection with a bank account.

Before we end this article, I’d like to mention the feedback matter. This is not just an useful tool, it is the tool. It does have some common sense limits due to the fact that everybody has different likes and preferences but it is highly essential. So, if somebody tells you that they’re not so fond of the graphic displayed on your website, you should not get stressed about immediately changing it. It simply reflects that person’s preferences. If however, you’re being told that the font you are using is difficult to read, then you’d better check that out and if necessary make modifications. That being said, preferences are important, because if a large number of people tells you that your graphic is unattractive it might be a good idea to reconsider your approach. Do a little market research and some soul search and decide if is more important for you to stick to the graphic style or to change it in order to attract more clients.

We’d of course love to hear about your experiences. How has the interaction with your clients been so far? Do you have fun stories to share? How about useful ones?

If you do, please share them in the comments bellow. Do you have any delivery services, programs, apps to recommend? Share them and help the community!
just like in the previous weeks we leave you with the stories of our creators.

What is the favorite way to wrap your creations? How do you personalize it?

„I have decided to use simple packaging that represents me. I am very fond of the brown kraft boxes and little bags. I personalize them with stickers, stamps with my logo and website address and ribbons in the colors of my logo so that it all tells the same story. I never forget to add to each package my business card, the instructions for use and care of the objects as well as a thank you note.”
Nicoleta Stoian – fimo artist – Nicomade

Most important thing that you have learned from interacting with clients?

„I have learned that the client needs to be respected. The clients who choose to buy handmade products are very special and very demanding. They expect a good quality product, different from the offer available in regular stores. And from that point of view I truly understand them. That is why I am responsible when I sell my products. I can guarantee that my products are WELL made with high quality materials.”
Gaby Galamaga – handmade artist  – Kreativ Love

What is the favorite way to wrap your creations? How do you personalize it?

„I do not have a favorite way. I wrap based on each product. I personalize using stickers with my logo, at times I draw/paint on the paper, I add thank you notes, silk paper, little bags of lavender or other small gifts for the customer, ribbons, bows, etc. I do have to admit though that it does depend on the available time. Sometimes there simply isn’t enough time.”
Andreea Badragan – ceramic artist – GloryBox

Most important thing that you have learned from interacting with clients?

„Keep an open mind about things and listen to what they want and try to make it happen within your own style. Also show original work to attract people and make them feel more connected to your work. And always do it with a smile!”
Martine Scholten – painter/ilustrator  – Tine Creates

A few words about the chosen style of photography? How does it say you?

„After many attempts I found that the simple style suits me and what I do best. Most of my objects are brightly colored and full of joy and so, an overly decorated background would not work well as it would be rather distracting.
I photograph my objects on a simple background (white or a wood surface). The important thing is to catch the details using various angles and when possible to photograph the object in its intended context (for example: desk portraits on a shelf or on the table surrounded by other daily objects, etc).”
Nicoleta Stoian – fimo artist – Nicomade

A few words about the chosen style of photography? How does it say you?

„I would like for product photography to be more elaborated, to create an atmosphere, to have a certain light. However, as I was saying above, most of the time there isn’t enough time. It is just me, I have (fortunately) a lot of work and I do not have enough time to approach the photography as I would truly like. So I chose a simple and clean style, done generally on a white background which puts all the focus on the product itself.”
Andreea Badragan – ceramic artist – GloryBox

What is the favorite way to wrap your creations? How do you personalize it?

„I wrap my products in handmade boxes that I make all by myself. I match the colors and the message with the product that I am wrapping. I believe that a handmade product has even more magic if it is nicely packaged. And it really helps to harmoniously tell your story.”
Gaby Galamaga – handmade artist  – Kreativ Love

What is the favorite way to wrap your creations? How do you personalize it?

„For wrapping I like to use brown kraft paper, because it’s strong and neutral so you can customize it with stamps or draw on it to make it more personal. I also use white/mint striped boxes and red ribbon to keep it fun and colorful. It’s always nice to receive a package wrapped as a present even if you keep it for yourself.”
Martine Scholten – painter/illustrator  – Tine Creates

Most important thing that you have learned from interacting with clients?

„Smiling is magical, a friendly atitude works wonders and patience is simply essential.”
Andreea Badragan – ceramic artist – GloryBox
